steve hair fan live in miami for us. give us a sense of the thinking. a possible latin american pope, steve? >> reporter: jon, a lot of latin americans certainly do think so. there is real excitement in that conversation and in that possibility. the argument being made is that the future of the church is in the southern hemisphere. right now out of a world's $1.2 billion catholics, 42% are already living in latin america. so the argument goes the next pope should also be where the future is. of course the votes are not there yet. europe which has just 25% of the world's catholics, still controls more than half of the votes for the next pope, jon. jon: who so are considered the main contenders from latin america? >> reporter: jon, five or six names keep coming up. among the top three are some extremely strong candidates. first the cardinal from brazil, cardinal scheree are. in he is in the world's most populous catholic nation. cardinal sandri from argentina. he had key top posts in vatican. somewhat of a longer shot, cardinal maradiagoo got a lot of att

janice dean is with us to give us more what we should keep an eye on across the nation today. we'll have that a little later this hour. jon: breaking news now from washington. we're just getting word that the senate armed services committee plans to vote tomorrow on chuck hagel's nomination to be our next secretary of defense. so far only secretary of state john kerry has had smooth sailing through the confirmation process. overall the president's other nominees have faced very tough questioning in the senate. that includes chuck hagel, john brennan to be cia director and jack lew as treasury secretary. chief political correspondent carl cameron is live in washington with a look how this whole process is going. carl? >> reporter: hi, jon. well president obama is actually sort of behind the pace that his two predecessors set. george w. bush had his entire new second term cabinet in place in the first week of february. and bill clinton back in 1997 had his whole team in place by the end of january. he was inaugurated and they were all virtually confirmed in a block. the presiden

can you tell us about it? >> well, jon, this is something that began 12 years ago and it's had a long hiatus. and that is reviewing that which we agree about. today we're hearing that we agree about high-skilled people, particularly ones who get advanced degrees in science and math from u.s. universities. they need to be allowed to stay here because they're net creators of jobs. we're also hearing about the need for a guest worker program for migrant labor, for people who pick our crops. and then in between we have 11 million people, many of whom have been here a long time, we need to come to consensus at least on the things we can agree on and take care of those including making sure we don't have to go through this exercise again and again. you know, america allows one million people to come here legally to become citizens every every year. we have to take a little credit for the fact that even though our system is broken, it's still the most generous in the world. jon: the republican party, well, 7 out of 1

we have a fox business news contributor with us. phil, all the numbers tell us gas prices are high. why are they high. >> reporter: there are so many reasons. especially you mentioned california. california of course had that huge refinery fire earlier this year. it forced a lot of those other refiners to pick up the slack and not go into maintenance early. now they can't stay out of maintenance forever, so they went into maintenance, causing a tightness of supply. i'll tell you, jenna, around the country we've had major refining issues that have caused the price of gasoline to go up, whether it be the east coast because of the hurricane, you know, the midwest because of the big crude unit going down, or even on the west coast. refining issues are number one, number two was the price of crude. you know, china consumed more crude than they ever did in the month of january, that helped drive up the cost of crude oil, and when crude oil prices go up gasoline prices always follow. jenna: this is the prices that we're seeing in february. what is the summer driving season going to look li
